Jeongdong Observatory – A Panoramic View of Deoksugung Palace

Deoksugung Palace is one of the most visited palaces in Seoul and is famous for its stonewall road. But not many know about Jeongdong Observatory, where you get to enjoy a panoramic view of Deoksugung palace. You might have seen a few aerial shots of the palace on instagram and wondered, where were those pictures taken from?

The 13th floor in the building opposite Deoksugung Palace, is home to Cafe Darak, a cafe cum observatory. One can either get a coffee or tea for ₩2,000 and admire the amazing views of the palace, or just enjoy the views of the palace for free! Though the cafe is seldom packed, for those who managed to get a seat by the windows, you do get people snooping and snapping away with their smartphones and DSLRs over your shoulders #guiltyascharged. But seriously, can you blame me them? Those views are to die for!

Needless to say, the best views of the palace can be found during Autumn, when the palace is surrounded by red, yellow and orange fall foliage. For those planning to visit Deoksugung Palace, it is highly recommended that you stop by Jeongdong Observatory first before visiting the palace.

Gajayo’s Tip:

Legend has it that couples who walk along Deoksugung Stonewall Road (footpath that surrounds the palace) together will end up breaking up. In fact, the road used to lead to the family court where married couples go to get divorced, so the Koreans believe that the road is cursed. But if you are not superstitious, it is a pretty romantic walk to take though.
